Canada is a country which relies on immigration as an economic driver.  The worker-to-retiree ratio is fast declining here & the country will continue to need immigrants to drive economic growth in the future in spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic. Before announcing its annual immigration levels plan this fall, the federal government plans to consult with stakeholders on the future of Canada’s intake levels.

Here’s an insight on the Impact of Coronavirus pandemic on Canada immigration in the near future, brought to you by M&G, the best immigration consultants.

Canadian Minister for Immigration Marco Mendicino has hinted that Canada will remain open to immigrants even after COVID-19. He observed that COVID-19 will not change Canada’s long-term demographic trends.

The IRCC Operations in Canada are affected with the lockdown as most of the staff is working remotely. Even the processing of immigration applications has become slow. However, the use of modern technologies has facilitated the expediting of the processing for seasonal agricultural worker permits under its Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). With this, IRCC is supporting the federal government’s efforts to strengthen the food supply of Canada.

Besides all these efforts Canadian Government is always looking for ways to create some additional flexibility around work permits. The circumstances of the source countries of the immigrants is posing severe challenges to get foreign workers into Canada apart from the reduced demand for certain products.

As for the International Students, more flexibility is to come! The federal government is revamping its international student policies in response to the pandemic. According to the feedback received from several stakeholders, IRCC has recently introduced a Post-Graduation Work Permit reform. Most colleges and universities have started giving online courses due to the restrictions in travelling brought in by the pandemic. International students who take online courses remain eligible for the PGWP as per the new reform.
The IRCC is also consulting the post-secondary stakeholders on how to help international students who will be enrolling in Canadian educational institutions during the September 2020 intake period.
